Engagement with local digital twins (LDTs) presents the challenge of creating effective and sustainable citizen participation strategies. Successful digital participation requires that the engagement aligns with the LDT’s objectives, is resourceful, and remains inclusive over time. Without addressing this alignment, participation efforts risk being ineffective and failing to integrate community input into LDT projects. A structured methodology for developing a citizen participation strategy can address this challenge. The process involves foundational planning, platform selection, and operational strategy. Goals must align with the LDT’s purpose, systems must meet technical and ethical standards, and the participation process should support decision-making, encouraging inclusive and meaningful citizen engagement in LDT development. This learning unit guides participants through developing a citizen participation strategy using a mock LDT scenario. Activities include setting goals and participation objectives, evaluating digital platforms, and ensuring sustainability and accessibility. Participants apply the methodology to practical exercises, fostering the skills necessary to implement and assess digital participation strategies effectively for citizen engagement in LDT projects.
